Convert Movable Type Import Format to Joomla articles

We recently had a need to import posts from a TypePad blog to a Joomla site, and at first this seemed to be a daunting task. Because TypePad exports as Movable Type Import Format, we were faced with the prospect of converting the export file to mySql data.

A quick search showed several relevant solutions, but none seemed to be a quick and easy fix. So we got to thinking- WordPress uses a mySql database, and shouldn’t it have the ability to import from other blogs?

Sure enough, we took a look and saw that we could indeed import from Blogger, Blogroll, Blogware, DotClear, GreyMatter, LiveJournal, Movable Type and TypePad, RSS, Textpattern, and many more. Simply go to Tools->Import, and select the type of import.

So there you have it, a simple solution to convert TypePad blogs to Joomla (or any other CMS).

  1. Export your blog posts
  2. Import to WordPress using the built-in import tools
  3. Export from WordPress using the built-in export tools
  4. Grab the WordPress to Joomla converter at http://www.daydreymer.com/index.php/technical/tools/wordpress-export-to-joomla.html (there are converters for Drupal and other CMS out there too- use Google to locate these).
  5. Import the converted data to your Joomla install using phpMyAdmin

20 minutes later, and we have recreated hundreds of TypePad posts to Joomla. Do note, this process leaves any images at TypePad, so you will need to either leave that in place, or move the images too.

Artisteer

Added a new tool, Artisteer, to help speed up production of WP templates. It gives a good starting point for great designs, the new template we added today was done in less than an hour.

Upgrade to 2.8

Just updated to version 2.8 of WordPress, using the automatic update option in the admin. This worked well, but one issue was that although the update completed, the screen never refreshed. The application appeared to be hung, but was actually complete. This could cause confusion for a user.

Upgrade to WordPress 2.7.1

well it looks like WP just keeps getting better. The upgrade from the admin was ease as pie, simply enter your FTP details and the system does the rest. One thing that might throw people, the main content screen in the admin side just sat blank, but after a moment or two I went to the dashboard and everything was as it should be.

Viper’s Video Quicktags

After the recent upgrade to this WP installation, I thought it would be nice to be able to easily add some embedded media. So I installed the Viper’s Video Quicktags plugin via the admin panel. Very nice, you can easily add videos from Read the rest of this entry »

Upgrades

Just upgraded this WordPress installation to the latest stable. I like the new admin interface, seems mmore intuitive and we found that the version 2.6 was not so for clients.

Also installed the All in One SEO Pack, looks like a nice solution and we will report on its functionality as we evaluate performance.

Also found a tuturial for the latest 2.7 version at YouTube, thought this might be helpfule to users that have upgraded:
